📜 A Glimpse into History:
Shepton Mallet Prison has a haunting history that dates back to 1625. Initially, men, women, and children were held in deplorable conditions, giving rise to the notorious gaol fever. The prison saw significant expansions during the Victorian era, including the addition of the tread wheel and a second story in each wing. Closed in 1930 due to dwindling numbers, it reopened as a British Military prison at the onset of WWII and later as a facility for US servicemen. Notoriously, this location had 16 US servicemen executed and served as a secret repository for invaluable historical records during the war. The prison closed its doors permanently in 2013.
