Stephan Crump: "Slow Water"

🎶 Join us for an unforgettable evening as Memphis-bred, Brooklyn-based composer and bassist Stephan Crump unveils his remarkable ensemble and captivating body of work, inspired by Erica Gies’s insightful book Water Always Wins. This event shapes a dialogue about redefining our relationship with water amid rapid change.

✨ Crump, a vital figure in diverse music communities, has spent two decades as a core member of Vijay Iyer’s renowned trio, fortifying the band's international acclaim. His various ensembles, such as Rhombal with Tyshawn Sorey and Secret Keeper with Mary Halvorson, emphasize versatility and innovative voicings, moving beyond traditional musical configurations. Additionally, his Borderlands Trio, alongside pianist Kris Davis and drummer Eric McPherson, echoes this philosophy in a more familiar jazz setting.

🎤 Among his many collaborations are celebrated artists like Miguel Zenón, Patti Austin, and Wadada Leo Smith. Crump extends his passion for music through his new sextet Slow Water, which dives into themes of ecology and environment through collaborative composition.

🎓 As a dedicated educator, he’ll also share insights from his course “On Magnetism,” focusing on connecting deeply with one’s instrument—a journey he has embraced all his life. Crump resides in Brooklyn with his wife, singer Jen Chapin, and their two sons.
