About the event

Join us for an enriching discussion on the Aesthetics of Unreality, a chapter from the groundbreaking book Speculative Everything. This book challenges conventional views of design, exploring alternatives that spark imagination rather than merely solving problems.

What to Expect:

Each Monday, delve into a new chapter of Speculative Everything, using it as a springboard for conversation, inquiry, and creative experimentation. The reading group will culminate in a collaborative public showcase of works inspired by our discussions. Possible exhibition formats include installations, speculative objects, design fictions, research artifacts, performances, publications, and more — all envisioning alternative futures!

Participation:

  • Join Anytime: You don’t need to attend every session; each chapter can be explored individually. Come for the topics that intrigue you the most!
  • Cumulative Experience: Regular attendees will have enhanced opportunities to contribute to the exhibition’s direction and collective projects.

Whether you identify as an artist, designer, technologist, researcher, writer, futurist, or simply curious, this series provides a unique space to collectively ponder and begin to construct possible worlds.

Meeting Schedule:

  • Week 1: Preface + Chapter 1: Beyond Radical Design?
  • Week 2: Chapter 2: A Map of Unreality
  • Week 3: Chapter 3: Design as Critique
  • Week 4: Chapter 4: Consuming Monsters: Big, Perfect, Infectious
  • Week 5: Chapter 5: A Methodological Playground: Fictional Worlds and Thought Experiments
